RE: What are you up to?

Your post about Pony got me thinking about what I did in the week and a half before the b-day bash. Man, that was a crazy week and a half and my poor parents had to put up with me as a chauffer when they flew up for my grandma's b-day bash, which was at the end of all of this, ensuring that I was exhausted, not the best driver and not the nicest person.

Here's the summary I posted in my livejournal the following Monday. All of the classes mentioned take place in Nassau County, Long Island.

Wednesday 5/10-Independents: Hamilton Street Cafe, Bound Brook, NJ

Thursday 5/11- Morning-Last Crim Law class before the final

Evening-Independents: The Backstage, Kingston, PA

Friday 5/12-Early Evening-Joey Ramone Photo Exhibit opening at the CBGBs 313 Gallery

Late Night/into the next day-Botched attempt to see the Independents at Ding Batz in Clifton, NJ results in Dave, Jari and I going to Atlantic City. We arrived around 2:00am and left around 5:00. I got home around 9:30 after driving through 4 of the 5 boroughs in less than an hour...some more than once.

Sunday 5/14-Baghdaddios: Otto's Shrunken Head, New York, NY

Monday 5/15-Uncle Monk: Parkside Lounge. New York, NY

Tuesday 5/16-Pre-employment class

Thursday 5/17-Crim Law Final/Pre-employment class

Friday 5/19-Afternoon: Lunch date with my classmates, On the Border, Hicksville, NY

Evening: Joey Ramone Birthday Bash-Irving Plaza, New York, NY

Saturday 5/20-My grandma's 85th Birthday Party: Danfords, Port Jefferson, NY

Sunday 5/21-5 hour drive home to Maryland, which is where I now am and will be until 6/1 unless I get a job interview before that. I will be doing some hunting online.

Whoa that seems like a busy week!!

I'm sure they didn't mind you as their driver haha Even if you had a busy week, you still got to see the Independents, wich is pretty awesome

Plus I bet you're a really nice person to be in a car with

Thanks I can be a nice person to be in the car with, but I wasn't that day At one point, my dad said that next time they'd get a taxi from the airport and let me sleep in...I was completely wiped and pretty bitchy as a result...I fell asleep at 7 that night after copious amounts of caffine during the day and stayed asleep for a long time. I really was too tired to be driving. Getting home at 4/4:30am like I did from the b-day bash does not bode well if you have to pick up your parents at the airport at 10am. Multiply that times 10 if you've basically been staying out until at least 2 almost every night for the past week and a half.

Was worth it though...I had a great time at the Independents shows and everywhere else I went during that time, including the birthday party I was half asleep for.

Hahaha, I'm glad you enjoyed it in spite of your tiredness

You're so lucky to have seen the Independents, and been at the Joey bash, I hope I can do both one day too And your grandma's birthday is the same as Joey's, that's pretty cool

But wow, stayed up 'till 2 every day for over a week, I'd be pretty "bitchy" too I guess haha

Right now, I'm about to head for work in not too long... I wish I didn't have to, but I need the money haha.
It's not hard work though, I'm a paperboy, but it's freezing outside at night, now that it's fall and so on.

Hope everyone's doing fine!

Yuck, being cold sucks Hope you can keep reasonably warm.

Last night, I saw Jesse Malin at the Continental. Good stuff. Didn't like it at first, but it grew on me and I wound up having a great time. He did some songs with HR from bad brains. Unfortunately, I had to miss his last song (this came later, after HR) b/c I wanted to catch the second latest train so I could have a few hours of sleep before my noon job interview, which I had to go back into the city for.

While I was driving to the train station this morning, the bastards called me and cancelled. Would have been nice if I'd had some advance notice. I told the woman who called me to cancel to tell the person who was supposed to interview me that I didn't appreciate the cancellation being so last minute.I'd understand if someone got sick or something, but they said that they had "made other arrangements" If you're looking into making other arrangements, then wait until you know what's going to happen before you schedule interviews with people! Just as well that the interview was cancelled-I'd rather work for someone who has some manners.

Since I was all dressed up and stuff, I went to interview for a semi-classy department store that was hiring and having walk-in interviews. I figured that since they were a bit classier and most of the people I've seen working there were older, my degree, cert and internships would be an asset there, not a liability like they are everywhere else besides the temp agencies. I guess I was right because they hired me at the end of the interview. I still need to find a job that will actually pay the bills, but this will at least give me some spending money that I don't have to pay back to my parents and since I'll only be working nights and weekends, I'll be free to interview for such jobs. Now I just gotta make sure I can get Friday the 27th off so I can see the Independents!

Yeah I know, I wish it could be summer all over again
But I'm sure I can manage the cold, I'll just wear lots of clothes.

Oh you're so lucky, that you can go to the Continental, I've always wanted to go there sometime, and I hope I will! Too bad you missed that last song though, but you had a good time even if you did. And about the interview they cancelled, that sucks, but hey, you did get a job to earn spending money
I'm sure you'll find a decent job soon, atleast as you said, your work is only nights and weekends, so you have time to go to interviews, so that's great!!
Aw, I wish I could see The Independents on the 27th haha.

I'll go to one of their shows sooner or later, 'cos I WILL see them sometime!!

I'm sure you'll get to see the Independents some day...hope it's sooner, rather than later.

I'm starting to wish the store had offered me a shift that didn't involve Fridays (they offered me two options, both had Fridays)...first this show and now the Dictators and the Bullys at CBGB. I see the Bullys all the time, but of the three dates the Dictators have played in NYC since I started school up here 3 years ago, two were during a snowstorm that was bad enough for me not to safely be able to get into the city, but not bad enough for CBGB to cancel (they were back to back) and one was when I was not only on summer vacation, but on a trip to Florida. The Independents didn't go on until 12 the last time they played that club and I get off work at 10. It doesn't take two hours to get to that part of Jersey from where I live and I don't usually like the bands that open for the Independents, so if the Independents are supposed to go on at 12 again, I may just ask for the day of the Dictator's show off and then go to the Independents show straight from work. At least I'm making money to spend on these shows.

Unfortunately, the Continental now no longer has live music, but starting in October, it will re-open as just a bar, so maybe you can visit the bar one day. I'll let you know what it's like in relation to what it was like as a rock club. You may have to wait a while, though. The drinking age in the United States is 21. Some bars don't ask for ID unless you orderalchol there, but others won't let you in unless you're old enough to drink. I'll also let you know which the Continental is when I know.

This place has been one of my main haunts in NYC since I turned 21 (actually since the 18 and up Independents show 2 weeks before I turned 21...thanks again for lowering the age restriction!), so I'm really going to miss it, a lot more so than CBGB.

The last night there was amazing. Charm School, the Bullys (http://www.myspace.com/thebullys), Lenny Kaye, Handsome Dick Manitoba, CJ Ramone, Walter Lure and Daniel Rey all played. CJ, Daniel and Walter played together. Trigger joined in on a couple of numbers too.It all ended with the Rolling Stones song "The Last Time"

The show doubled as a tribute show to the Bullys guitarist, Johnny Heff, who was killed on 9/11. Bullys Alums Beertruck and G-Rod both played songs and G-rod brought sand from a beach near where Heff grew up and spilled it out on the stage. The guitarist who took over for Heff, Danny Nez, sprinkled some of the sand in his guitar case.

Sometime in the near future, I'm probably going repost this on the Joey board and add some details about the other preformances.

I didn't see him the club, but I saw Legs McNeil walking down the Bowery before the show. I also think I saw Donna Gaines a few minutes later. The Johns Holmstrom and Nikolai were both there, as was Babybongo55 from the Joeyramone.com board. And I'm sure I'm forgetting someone.

Unfortunately, as I posted on the Joey board, something really awful happened later that night: http://www.wnbc.com/traffic/9873935/detail.html

That really freaked me out b/c even though I only have to drive home from the train station (part of the reason for my taking the train being all the drunk drivers on the road at 2am, aside from the fact that driving in NYC in general scares the **** out of me), what happened just hit too close to home. I don't usually drink at shows if I have to drive at any later point, but you don't have to drink to be hit by a drunk driver.

RIP Emily

Oh, I hope you get the day off, to see the Dictators
Yeah I heard what happened, that's so sad, and the Continental is closing, that sucks!!!

Both CBGB's and the Continental is happening sad things to...
You're so lucky you have been both places!! If the Continental doesn't set their age limit to 21, then I can go see it in 2 years, when I'm 18 I really wish they didn't close though...

You're so lucky o see all these cool people I could only dream about haha, I hope I can meet them too someday I hope I can vacation in NY sometime soon.

Right now, I'm sitting in the livingroom, gonna go get a cup of cola while eating some candy, and listen to The Independents!!

I got both days off! Apparently the days I was supposedly hired to work aren't as rigid as I thought, so basically they just have me working days other than Friday those weeks. And from the way I've been scheduled so far, it doesn't appear that I'm always going to be working the specfic weeknights the person who hired me told me that I would be whether I ask for certain days off or not, which is fine by me as long as I get the hours one way or another. I don't know about the week of the Independents show b/c they haven't scheduled that far in advance, but I know that the week of the Dictator's show, I'm not working any fewer hours than I would be if I hadn't asked for that Friday off.

27 more days!!!!!

Now for the damn Dictators tickets to go on sale. The show's 13 days away, what the hell are they waiting for?!

Yup AND I have a job interview tommorow too! AND I had one tonight! And I got drunk at the new Continental

The new Continental is very nice, parts of it are the same, but most of it is different. But Trigger was classy about the new stuff, didn't try to turn the place into a pop culture haven or any of that ****. And he was doing a brisk business. I think this pleased him b/c, for the first time I can ever remember, he actually smiled at someone other than one of the musicians he was friends with

Thanks for some reason, I wound up getting slammed with a total of 4 job interviews in less than a week's time...hopefully one of them will hire me, although the one other time that happened, no one did. I also got two e-mails from people putting out feelers for jobs, but they have yet to respond to my responses. In the meantime, I need to get off my ass and send more resumes...it's been about a week since I've done that and some job ads are only good for that long.

Two words for the Dictator's set: ****ing awesome. The Bullys were on fire too. A band called the Sick ****s played in between and some of what they did was funny but, even with the new tricks they had (since I last saw them), I think they're only worth seeing once as they're more about the gimmick than the music. I've seen them more than once. I wish they had had the opening slot, not the Bullys.

The Continental was alright, but it was more fun walking around East Village drunk afterwards...it fits with the way I feel when I'm drunk and for me there's just somethingkind of amusing about walking around East Village in heels and a three piece suit...more so if I'm doing it while drunk....more in retrospect than anything else since I don't feel emotions when I'm drunk off beer. For some reason, Long Island Iced Tea makes me detached like that, but also makes my surroundings really pleasent, so I'm also really happy at the same time. ::shrugs:: mind-altering substances are weird. I usually don't drink anyway b/c I have to drink home from the Long Island Rail Road Station at 3 or 4am and fatigue can prolong or increase the effects of being drunk.

Yeah, word of advice for when you get old enough to drink...be well aware that other factors can increase/decrease whatever reaction you have to booze and how you react to different kinds of alcohol before you're in a situation where you have to do anything while drunk other than sit on your ass and do nothing. Also, make sure you have both heavy food and hydrating liquids around in case you gotta sober up.

How come I'm always talking about what I've done? What are YOU up to, Tom?

Haha, yeah I'm sure someone will hire you soon, you can't be un-employed forever you know

Well, there's not really much new about me to say, except, I quit my last job, I worked as a kiosk-sales man... I walked in the hospitals with a cart, selling magazines, candy etc etc. (Sorry for the lame explanation, what I worked with don't really have a name haha ) Yeah well anyways, I attended a new job as a paperboy a few months ago. I wish I didn't have to go now though, during fall and winter, it's waaaaay too cold. But atleast the payment is pretty good, so that's good. Over to some SAD news (yes we need some of that too) I've lost pretty much contact with a really good friend of mine, well, she was... Wich sucks!! She's really nice and all, but... I dunno..

Lately I've been thinking of how to get more people to join this board, I'd like to promote it somehow, but it all costs money... And yeah, I'm not that rich haha. But I mean, I like doing this board, I like when new people register, and if I had a regular income, I would spend alot of money on this board for sure. MySpace is the only place where I do it now. But I'm sure people will notice it more later on... If you type in "The Independents MessageBoard", this MB comes up as #1

Umm... today, my day started off by almost being late for school, and then I came home to foind out that my cat pooped two places under my bed.... TWO haha
But yeah, he's just a cat, and he had been inside all day long. Then I have been talking to some friends, and finally put up the new background for this board, and now I have to go to work in a little while, and then I'm gonna sleep. Thank god it's weekend soon Thanks for the advice on alchohol
